St. Vincent dePaul’s Historical Bell
Welcome to the St. Vincent dePaul Church’s historical bell tab. What you heard was the welcoming ringing of our original church bell, located in the bellfrey of the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Portland, Pa.
We are proud to have one of the few original working bells in Northampton County, if not the distinction of having the only working original church bell in all of Northampton County. This dates back to 1925 and is still manually rung today by pulling a rope. The bell was recently restored to its former glory by Highclimbers Co., Chester Springs, PA. It was originally forged by Bethlehem Steel located in Bethlehem, PA. This beautiful bell is made completely of steel and is 33 1/4″ in diameter.
The church bell is rung before every Mass at St. Vincent dePaul and is also rung for weddings and funerals. The bell was also rung on the anniversary of September 11th and on December 14, 2012, the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, as a sign of respect for the victims.
We hope you will visit St. Vincent dePaul Church to attend Mass and have the opportunity to hear our historic church bell.
